POET vs ASP.NET: DotNetNuke

In this video we show how to use POET to attack the latest version of ASP.NET. The target application is DotNetNuke. The attack consists of two phases: 1. In the first phase, we use POET to extract DotNetNuke's secret keys, and use those keys to generate a cookie to login as a super user. The same technique can be used to attack _every_ ASP.NET application. 2. In the second phase, we use Cesar Cerrudo's Token Kidnapping attack to gain SYSTEM privilege on the Windows server hosting DotNetNuke. This research was done by Thai Duong and Juliano Rizzo. Create Computer Games - Get Started on Creating Your Own Virtual Worlds

I’ve always loved video games, ever since I first played them on a friend’s computer in the afternoon after elementary school. There’s something almost magical about the fact that we can move images around and interact with virtual worlds, a living fantasy presented for us to interact with however we please. I’ve also always wanted to make games myself but, until recently, didn’t have the technical knowledge to do so. Now, I’m a second year software engineering student, so if I weren’t able to code a game without too many dramas there’d be something drastically wrong. But what about the common person: the person for whom the term ‘memory leak’ conjures up images of their grandfather, ‘pipeline’ is where the water flows, and ‘blitting’ is unheard of? Well, everyone can get in on the game creation process, and you don’t even need to learn ‘real’ programming to do so.

So where do games start? With an idea. Games, like all fiction, require an idea to be successful. Sure, in the same way you can just sit down and write a story without foresight, you can jump on in and slap a game together. However, unless you get ridiculously lucky, the best works are usually the ones that have been well thought out beforehand.

There are two methods of planning a project. You can start from a known technological standpoint and build your project on top of that or you can just go for the design, add as many features and ideas as you like, and then remove the ones that you can’t use when you’ve decided on the technology you’re going to implement the game with. In general, the second type is probably the best one to go with when designing games. When you’re first starting out however, the first option will save you many headaches.

So, for a first game you’re going to want a pretty simple idea. Don’t get me wrong, crazy-go-nuts game ideas are fantastic, and there should be more of them out there, but you’re not going to be able to create a real world simulator with fifty billion virtual people all interacting real time with your actions having a butterfly effect on the future of the virtual universe when it’s just your first game. Really. Many people try it; none that I know of have succeeded. Imitation is the best way to start out. Simple games such as ‘Space Invaders’, ‘Tetris’, ‘Pacman’ or even ‘Pong’ are great places to start. All are largely simple to create but have some inherent challenges. ‘Pacman’ for example, requires path finding for the ghosts. I recommend that you start even simpler than that for your very first attempt. ‘Space Invaders’ is a nice point to jump in. You can make a simple, complete game without much effort and it’s almost infinitely extensible.

If you’re stuck for an idea, pick a genre that you enjoy. Do you love adventure games such as ‘Monkey Island’, ‘Grim Fandango’, ‘Space Quest’, ‘King’s Quest’ etc.? Design one of those. Are you into fighting games like ‘Street Fighter’, ‘Tekken’, ‘Soul Calibur’, ‘Mortal Kombat’ and so on? Come up with an idea for that. Do you like first person shooters such as ‘Quake’, ‘Half Life’ or ‘Doom’? I don’t recommend it as a first project, but you can always give it a go. Feel free to be as generic as you like, this is a learning experience after all.

Now that you have your idea it’s time to flesh it out. Don’t worry about the technology or the fact that you may not know how to actually implement a game just yet, just grab yourself some paper and a pencil and go crazy with ideas. Describe the main characters, game play, goals, interactions, story, and key mappings, anything you can think of. Make sure you have enough detail so that someone can read through the notes and play through the game in their head with relative accuracy. Changing game design during the coding process is almost always a bad idea. Once it’s set, it should remain set until the tweaking phase (I’ll go into this more later) or you’re likely to enter ‘development hell’, where the project goes on and on; more and more work is done with less and less outcome.

At the end of this period of your game creation, you should have the following:

- A written outline of the game’s characters and possibly a sketch or two (be they space ships, yellow circles, cars or the prince of the dark kingdom of Falgour, you need to know who or what the player will be and who they will compete against)

- A written outline of the story (if there is one, this isn’t too vital for ‘Space Invaders’ or ‘Tetris’, but for ‘Uber Quest: An Adventure of Awesomeness’ it’s a really good idea)

- A description of game play, written or storyboarded. Storyboards are visual representations of ideas. Draw your characters in actions, with arrows showing the flow of action and short written descriptions detailing the events occurring in your image (because some of us aren’t fantastic artists and our images can be a little… open to interpretation…)

Now that you have a fleshed out idea, it’s time to work out how this will all get put together. If you’ve gotten to this point and are worried that you’re going to have to spend years learning complex programming languages in order to implement your idea, fear not! Others have already done the hard yards for you. There are many RAD (Rapid Application Development) Tools available for game creation, a number of which are available for free online. Some of them still require you to learn a ‘scripting language’ (a simplified programming language made for a specific task) but in general this isn’t too complicated or involved. I’ve compiled a brief list of some of these I have found at the end of the article. The free ones are listed first, organized by game genre.

Well, that should be enough to get you started in the creation of your game. The most important thing to remember once you’ve gotten this far is that you need to complete your game. Many people start a project and then lose interest and it fails, or they keep moving on to one new project after another without finishing anything. Start small, build a working (if simple) game that is, above all else, complete. When you get to this stage you will always have a huge number of things that you wish to change, fix etc. but you’ll get a great feeling from knowing that it is, in its way, finished.

From this point, you can start the tweaking phase. Play your game a few times and ask others to do the same. Take note of what isn’t fun or could be better and change things here. At this stage, it is more important than ever to keep backups of previous versions so that if a change doesn’t work you can go back and try something different without losing any of your work. It is at this point that you can add all new features, improve graphics and sounds, whatever you please, safe in the knowledge that you’re working on a solid foundation.

When you’re happy with your game, why not share it with the world? There are many cheap or free places out there for you to host your files on and then you can jump on link lists and forums and let everyone know about your creation. Well, I hope that this has been a helpful introduction into the art of creating games. It’s a great deal of fun, and can open whole new avenues of creative expression for you to explore. Jump in and have fun!

6 Easy Ways to Cloak and Redirect Affiliate Links

You may have heard all the hype over affiliate links getting stolen and losing up to 40% of affiliate commission. All these attempts prey on people to instill in their minds that they may not be getting what they deserve. I know that commission stealing is a problem, and affiliate networks like Clickbank have taken steps to plug the leaks in their systems. I use cloaked affiliate links or redirect pages a lot not because I'm afraid of having commission deliberately stolen from right under my nose, but because I'm annoyed at the length and ugliness of affiliate URL's.

The whole idea of cloaking or redirecting has much to do with people's nature. To be more specific, it's all about psychology. It's interesting that people are hesitant to click affiliate links and tend to cut off the ugly looking part in an affiliate link before pasting it to the browser. Now Let's compare the following two links:
http://www.make-you-rich.com/copy.asp?storefront=weishengwu
And
http://www.make-you-rich.com
Which one looks more clickable? The answer is pretty clear.

You can replace long URL's with cloaked links or short, server-side redirects so that people won't feel pitched and won't be turned off by links that are obviously affiliate links. There are several ways to create clean links that you can use to direct buyers to your sales pages. Read through the description below and see which one meets your needs and fall within your skill level.

1. Directory Redirect

Connect to your web server and create a properly named directory. Then create an index.html and put a redirect code in it.

2. Sub-domain Redirect

Most web hosting providers allow you to have several sub-domains. Simply log on to the control panel, set up your sub-domain and then set up the redirection.

3. Redirect Script

Several scripts are available out there that you can install on your web page to protect and redirect your links. You may need to put the code between the head section.

4. .htaccess

This is only recommended for advanced users because it involves modifying the .htaccess file on your server. Here's how to do it. Create a properly named directory. Put a file called .htaccess by creating it using a text editor. This file should contain the Redirect command, the location of the directory you want redirected relative to the root of your site and the full URL of the location you want that request sent to.

You can find all the above mentioned codes for free. Do your research and then implement it to see how it works. I have put a link for downloading a free e-book containing these codes on my blog.

Besides creating redirect pages, you can cloak your affiliate links using commercial software programs or services. Listed below are popular ones on the market.

5. Software Programs:

Affiliate Link Cloaker and LinkGuardII. These two programs take your long, ugly link and mask it with a redirect link.

6. Services:

NameStick turns long, ugly affiliate or website links and turn them into a short, clean links (cloaked or not cloaked). It allows you to set up domain forwarding and unlimited sub-domains. NameStick forwarding domains and sub-domains are bookmarkable, and you can customize the title visitors see in their bookmark listings. I use NameStick service to create many neat and clean affiliate links to make my business look bigger.

If you're serious about your business, you need to take action right away. Redirect or cloak your links to make them more clickable. You may be surprised by how a little effort on your part can make a big difference to your online business.

Setting Up an Ecommerce Website

All business minded people would always want a guarantee for any business that they put up. In fact, in the actual business world, before any business is set up, there has to be a series of surveys done and feasibility studies conducted. This is to ensure that setting up the business is worth the money, time and effort. This is so because in an actual business set up, you need the space, products, marketing, manpower, and fixtures. However, with the advent of technology, a new way of testing the waters is through ecommerce.

Ecommerce is actually electronic commerce which is done online. In other words, setting up an ecommerce is like setting up a virtual store where people can shop and purchase some items. Although this may sound easy, which is practically true; there are some things that you have to consider in setting up an ecommerce website.

1. Select a website host. A website host acts as your online landlord. The website host is renting out space for you to use in your shopping site. It is therefore important to select the website host that can offer you the necessary requirements for your website to be successful and sustainable. Some of the things that you need to look for in website host are: bandwidth, space, and uptime guarantee. There are a number of good web hosts in the internet; all you have to do is simply select the best.

2. Choose an ecommerce application. One of the simplest and most convenient ecommerce applications is the PayPal 'Buy Now' button. Although this not give you all the features that shopping carts do, if you are on low budget, you can use PayPal temporarily until such time that you can afford other ecommerce packages.

3. Obtain an internet merchant. Since you are operating online, and all purchase and payments are made online also, you need to contact various internet merchants for payment arrangements. Since the most feasible mode of payment in the internet is through credit cards, debit cards, or PayPal, you have to arrange the payment schemes with these merchants. You should learn the ropes in setting up payment gateway accounts with credit card merchants; otherwise you need to seek the advice of someone who does.

4. Make your website people-friendly. One of the most important factors in setting up a website is for it to be people-friendly. This means that the website should be attractive, informative, and user-friendly. You have to consider the fact that not all internet users are well versed with the technology such that it is vital to integrate easy navigational tools in your website.

5. Build your website. Your website should include product description with images if possible, and price tag. Make sure that the shopping cart that you use accurately calculates tax and shipping costs, prices, and charges the customers for the purchases.

If you are planning to set up an eshop it is advisable to check out ecommerce solutions for more useful tips and advice.

Create Free Professional Websites

Many people who are just getting started online want to create a free professional website so that they can prove to themselves that it will make money before they spend hundreds or thousands on a full blown web design. That's usually a smart move.

You will, however, at the very least want to pay for hosting so that the content you post online is yours. If you post to free website hosting sites then you are often giving up your authorship rights and your control of the website. If at any time, for any reason, they decide to shut down your website you will have no recourse or ability to get it back.

With that in mind, it is entirely possible to create a free website that is both professional and profitable.

Here are some features you'll want to include to ensure your website's success.

Features of a professional website:

1. Includes an 'About' Page.

To new visitors you are a stranger and they don't trust you yet. An about page will start to build that trust so that you can make offers they will respond to. All good websites must include an about page.

2. Includes Contact Information.

Now imagine your visitor is ready to buy but they just have one quick question they need answered first. They look around but can't find your contact information anywhere! Don't let this happen and make sure your website has full contact information including phone number, email and mailing address so your potential customers can choose their preference.

3. Has clear call to action.

No matter what the purpose of your website is you must let your visitors know and call them to action. Are you looking for them to call you, order a product, sign up for a free consultation or hire you? Tell them in clear, direct words so they don't miss the entire point of your website or individual pages.

4. High quality, clear graphics.

I once heard a colleague say that it's better to have no graphics on your website than have poor quality graphics and I completely agree! Make sure any graphics, logos, backgrounds, etc are of the highest quality.

5. Easy to read font.

The worst websites are the ones that nobody can read. The best font color for reading is black with a white background. Don't put a barrier between you and potential customers by making your website hard to read.

6. Free 'Whitepaper' or Newsletter.

A large majority of first time visitors will never buy from you and never return. What you need to do is catch their attention before they leave by offering something free, a sample that shows them what you offer. Do this in combination with an opt-in form so you can build your list and build the trust that is so important to future sales.

7. Privacy Policies, Website Disclaimers, Copyright.

Again, trust is huge. The online world of marketing is very easy to break into and that means there is a massive problem with scammers and thieves. Show your potential customers you are not one of them by having proper disclaimers, privacy policies and protect yourself with copyright notices.

8. Well thought-out Website Navigation.

You want your visitors to find what they are looking for quickly. If they can't find it in short order, they will leave. Make sure you have a well thought out website navigation that isn't overpowering with too many links. It's better to make sub-pages than to give your reader too many options right on the home page.

So there you have some of the most important elements of a professional website design.

And now you might want to know how to begin designing your own website. If you want to learn how to make a website with WordPress (a free software included with many good hosting companies) then check this free mini-course out:

Free Way to Make a Website - How to Make Your Own Website For Free Using a Free Software

There are a few ways to make a website, but more importantly, there are some FREE ways. You don't need to be an HTML expert, buy expensive software and spend time learning it, or outsource work to people only to have them charge you a lot of money and take a lot of time.

Just use this free way to make a website and you'll gain control over your online presence and be able to make websites at will.

1) Get a cheap web hosting plan with a company that offers access to "WordPress". WordPress is going to be the free software we use to make our website. This is "open source" software so it is free. People design cool themes and plugins that we can use for free. There are thousands to choose from. Some people will charge a fee for a theme, but most are free and those people just rely on donations for compensation.

2) Get a domain name and install WordPress onto the domain. This is a simple 1-2-3 process. Depending on which hosting company you go with, you will install WordPress using Fantastico, or Simple Scripts, etc... This is a simple process. Just take a look in your hosting account for step by step videos that walk through Wordpress installation.

3) Create the look, make the content, and publish the site! You create the look of the website by adding a theme in the "appearance" section of the admin area on your site. Then you'll add a "header" if you want and some "plugins" that do everything from helping with SEO to adding links to graphics.

Add your content, meaning text, pictures, videos, etc, and click "publish". Now you have used a popular free method of making a website!

---The first and most important step is to get a quality hosting plan for cheap. Does it have everything you'll need to make your own sites?---

You can take a look at our top ratings for hosting companies according to internet users at http://www.HowToHostAWebsite.org.

Have fun making your own sites!

Upgrading to ASP.Net 2? Why Your Website Might Stop Working When You Do

Asp.Net version 2 was just recently released by Microsoft and contains a feature rich set of classes that can do just about anything imaginable. However if your thinking about hosting your asp.net 2 site on a shared hosting environment there are a few considerations you should know about before you take the plunge. If you have already upgraded you may be wondering why your site that was working fine in version 1.1 but now has problems working in Asp.Net version 2.

Code Access Security

If you receive one of those generic yellow error messages that say something like the following:

Security Exception

Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file.

Exception Details: System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Net.WebPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.

The Reason? - Code Access Security!

As it turns out many shared hosting companies are setting the Security Trust level in the asp.net version 2.0 machine.config files to the default “Medium” setting then locking it down so it can’t be overridden by the application.

This is great from hosting perspective but not so good if you are a developer that uses asp.net functions like xml.load from another website, webrequest, webclient, system.net, etc… or many other classes that a default medium trust setting doesn’t allow.

What can you do?

There are a number of considerations on how to rectify this situation and the first is to contact your hosting company and ask them to create a modified version of the medium trust machine.config file to allow for the features you want to implement.

Microsoft has provided an article that describes this process and if you’re hosting company is not aware of it than shame on them.

The article can be found here: How To: Use Medium Trust in ASP.NET 2.0

Give this a good read as it explains not only how to modify medium trust but also how to code for the medium trust settings.

If that is not an option you might want to consider recoding your entire website to conform to medium trust, not a very good option, or moving to a hosting company that will work with you for your particular needs.

Allowing open socket connections is a security risk for a hosting company, but if you can establish that your code is not malicious a reputable hosting company should provide you with proper security clearance to utilize the rich classes that asp.net version 2.0 has to offer. After all they are claiming to sell you asp.net version 2.0. And if you can’t use version 2’s classes than you are not getting what you paid for.

Over time there will need to be a balance between the hosting companies security needs and the ability of a web developer to utilize the classes that make asp.net version 2.0 so brilliant and I hope that time comes sooner rather than later.
